We now offer Domain Registration and Transfer Services!

May 19th, 2009

We’re pleased to announce that we now offer domain registration, transfer, and management services.

As you problably know, there are two parts to having your website functional online: domain registration and web hosting. Domain registration is the process you use to register your unique domain name (IamSpecial.com). Once registered, only you can and use have that name. You must renew your domain registration annually to keep the name you’ve chosen. Web hosting is the service which allows your website to have a home and be visible online. You have to inform your domain registrar if your web hosting provider changes so that it can “point” visitors to your correct online address.

We’d like to invite you to transfer your domain registration to Ambient Glow. Why?

  • We offer competitive prices — our registration fees may be much less than what you are currently paying
  • As a current web hosting customer, you will have all your services in one place, making them easier to access and manage
  • Your unexpired time on your current registration will be carried over, so you lose nothing

Choosing a Domain Name

January 14th, 2009

Domain names use primary extensions known as TLDs (Top Level Domains). Some of the more common TLDs available are .com (originally used to represent for-profit organizations), .org (originally used to represent non-profit organizations), .net (originally used by Internet Service Providers), .us (a country code, used to designate an entity located in the United States), and the newest, .biz (a popular extension for businesses). You can use any of these TLDs for your domain name, or, if available, you can register all the variations.

The first step in getting your own domain name is to decide upon the name you’d like to use. This can sometimes be a long and arduous process, especially if you’d like to use a .com TLD, because this is the most popular and easily recognized extension, and many names have already been taken. It’s a good idea to develop a list of alternative names which describe your business so that, if the name you want isn’t available, you have others which will suit you equally well. Here are some techniques to consider when making up your list of possible names:

  • Try to keep your name as short as possible. Even though you can get a domain name with over 60 characters, most people will find it cumbersome to type in more than 25 characters. Which is easier to remember and type: MattsWonderfulandStupendousAwesomeWidgets.com or MattsWidgets.com?
  • Make use of hyphens. If your business name consists of several words, such as Bag It Now, you might not be able to get bagitnow.com, but bag-it-now.com could be available instead.
  • Make sure your business name and website name are similar, if not the same. You want people to remember how to find you easily and to come back. If they have to remember a business name and a domain name which is completely different, you risk losing customers or, worse yet, never having them find you in the first place.
  • Be creative. If your business name is Annie Q Consulting Group, you might look for Annie.com, AnnieQ.com, Annie-Q.com, AQconsulting.com, AQCG.com, and so on.
  • Know which of the TLDS you are willing to use. If you are dead-set on having a .com address, you may need to be more flexible in finding a name than if you were willing to go with .biz or .net.
