The Case for a Business Blog

Blogging has come a long way since it’s early days in the late 1990s, when the term "blog" was coined from the phrase "web blog". Early blogs were primarily of a personal nature. An individual would keep an online journal of his/her thoughts on life, or about a particular passion, and anyone who happened to wander by could read their viewpoints.

What made (and makes) blogs different than regular websites, however, is the ability of the reader to respond to posts, which allows for the potential of interaction and dialogue about subjects of interest. Because of this, personal blogs have evolved into a variety of different speciality genres, if you will, from travel blogs to music blogs to political blogs to ….well, you name it.

Along with the transformation of personal on-line journals to niche topic forums, blogs have also become more public as government agencies, non-profit groups, corporations and businesses have seen the value in being able to share information about their organization’s culture, products, services, or viewpoints and to hear back from their clients and customers. In this way, blogs have become an important part of a business’ overall public relations or marketing strategy.
