domain registration

How can I make the most of my domain name? Your domain name reflects you and your business to the online community and is a powerful resource for growing your business. The more ways people have of finding you, the better your opportunities are to connect with your customers and sell your products or services. Consider these suggestions when you register your new domain name:

  • Register additional extensions (such as .net, .org, .biz, etc.)
  • Register misspellings or common typing errors for your name that a competitor might register. For example, someone might type Microsoft.com as mikerowesoft.com.
  • Register domain names that describe your service, where you’re located, or your products. For example, if you are a jewelry store in Portland, you might want to register “PortlandJewelry.com” or “FineJewelry.com”.

What are my choices for domain name extensions? Domain name extensions are the two or three letters following the "dot" after your domain name. We register all the top-level domain extensions (TLDs).

domain transfers

You can transfer a domain to or from us anytime, at no cost except for the annual registration fee charged by the Registrar. If the expiration date for your domain is more than 45 days from the date you transfer the domain to us, we will add on an additional year to the registration at no extra cost (so you don’t lose any registered time you have already paid for). If your domain expiration is 45 days ore less when you transfer the domain the domain to us, it will expire at its normal time, and you will be notified to RENEW it upon its normal expiration date.

Are there any requirements for transferring domains? In order to transfer a domain between registrars, a domain must meet the following requirements:

  • The domain must be at least 60-days old. Domains that are not yet 60-days old are not transferable between registrars.
  • A domain must be in “ACTIVE” or “OK” status. If a domain is in “REGISTRAR-LOCK”, “REGISTRAR-HOLD”, “REGISTRY-LOCK”, “REGISTRY-HOLD”, “REDEMPTION PERIOD” or “PENDING DELETE” status, the global registries will not allow registrar transfer.
  • If the domain is being transferred to us, the original registration must have completed more than 60-days prior to a new transfer.
  • Per ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) regulations, a domain registrar is required to obtain legal authorization from the person who is listed as the Registrant or Administrative Contact on a domain. So, a transfer can only proceed if the domain owner agrees to it.

How is the Transfer verified? When an order to transfer a domain is initiated, verification is required. This is usually done by Auto-verification (email authorization). When an auto verification transfer order is submitted, a verification email will be sent to the registrant and administrative contact(s) for the domain(s). The Registrant must follow-through with the instructions in this email to release the domain to the new registrar.

How long does it take? Once a transfer request has been submitted to the registry, (moving the domain into "pending transfer" status), the current registrar for the name will receive notification of the request. ICANN Transfer Policy dictates that current registrar must release the domain within five (5) days of the date and time they were notified of the transfer request. Some registrars transfer more quickly than others, so your transfer may be complete within 24 hours or less. Please remember, however, that this is an automated process, involving at least four parties (the global registry, two registrars and the domain contacts), and response times vary.

How do I transfer my domain TO you?

*** IMPORTANT**** Before you begin, obtain your EPP key/Authorization code from your current Registrar and UNLOCK your domain at your current registrar so it can be transferred.

he EPP key (Authorization code) is one of the safeguards against unauthorized transfers of domain name registrations and it protects your rights as a domain owner. The EPP key is required when transferring .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info and .us domain names. It is not possible to initiate a domain name transfer for these domains without an EPP code. • Order Confirmation: This email lets you know the details of your domain transfer order and provides an order reference number.
  • Customer Invoice: This email provides you with an invoice to pay for your domain registration (if you haven’t already done so). Please note that your registration will not proceed until you have paid.

This is part of the safeguards to protect an unauthorized person transferring your domain. Depending on your current Registrar, you may need to follow instructions provided in that email to approve the request such as logging into your Registrar’s website and confirming the request. Often, however, you don’t have to do anything at this point but wait until the process has been completed. h. Domain Transfer Completed: when the domain transfer has been completed, you will receive an email stating that the work is done.
